How the TDEE Calculator Works

Your TDEE starts with an estimate of your basal metabolic rate, then adjusts it based on your activity level.

1

Enter your details

Add your age, sex, height, weight and typical activity level.

2

Calculate your BMR

The calculator estimates the energy your body uses at rest.

3

Estimate daily calories

Your BMR is adjusted for activity to estimate maintenance calories.

What Is TDEE?

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It is an estimate of the total number of calories your body uses in a full day.

Your daily energy use has several parts

Your body burns calories even when you are resting. That basic energy need is called your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR.

On top of BMR, your body also uses energy for walking, work, exercise, digestion and other daily activity. When these are combined, you get an estimate of your TDEE.

Your TDEE can be used as a practical starting point for planning calories for weight maintenance, weight loss or weight gain.

Important: TDEE is an estimate, not an exact measurement. Real calorie needs can vary from person to person.

Simple TDEE idea

The basic calculation is:

TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor

First, the calculator estimates your BMR. It then multiplies that result by an activity factor based on how active you are.

How TDEE Is Calculated

Our calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation to estimate BMR, then applies an activity multiplier to estimate total daily calorie needs.

Mifflin–St Jeor Formula

For men:

BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5

For women:

BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161

Activity multipliers

Activity level
Factor
Sedentary
1.20
Lightly active
1.375
Moderately active
1.55
Very active
1.725
Extra active
1.90

Choose the activity level that best matches your normal week rather than your most active day.

TDEE vs BMR: What Is the Difference?

BMR and TDEE are related, but they describe different parts of your daily energy needs.

BMR

Basal Metabolic Rate is the estimated number of calories your body needs to keep basic functions running while at rest.

  • Includes breathing, circulation and basic organ function
  • Does not include normal daily activity or exercise
  • Used as the starting point for estimating TDEE

TDEE

Total Daily Energy Expenditure estimates the total calories you use across an average day.

  • Starts with your estimated BMR
  • Adds the effect of your activity level
  • Useful for planning maintenance, loss or gain calories

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about TDEE, calorie needs and activity levels.

What does TDEE mean?

TDEE means Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It is an estimate of how many calories your body uses in a full day, including basic body functions and daily activity.

Is TDEE the same as BMR?

No. BMR estimates calories used at rest, while TDEE includes BMR plus the calories you use through normal movement and exercise.

How accurate is a TDEE calculator?

A TDEE calculator provides an estimate based on standard equations and the activity level you choose. Your real needs can be higher or lower because metabolism and daily movement vary between people.

Which activity level should I choose?

Choose the level that best represents your normal week. Avoid selecting a higher level based only on one unusually active day.

Can I use TDEE for weight loss?

TDEE can be used as a starting point for planning a calorie deficit. A moderate deficit is usually easier to maintain than a very aggressive reduction.

Can I use TDEE for weight gain?

Yes. You can use your estimated maintenance calories as a baseline and add a modest calorie surplus to support gradual weight gain.

How often should I recalculate my TDEE?

Recalculate when your weight, activity level or training routine changes noticeably. It can also be useful to review your estimate after several weeks of consistent tracking.
